Alweer voor de 33e keer werden in Joure dit jaar de Friese Ballonfeesten
georganiseerd. Ook al was het een warme zomer, dat wil nog niet zeggen dat het
ook ideaal ballonweer was. Met name de wind kan dan een spelbreker zijn en ook
kan er 's avonds gemakkelijk een onweersbui ontstaan. Daarom moest er soms lang
gewacht worden voordat de ballonnen omhoog gingen en werden sommige special
shapes alleen even opgezet. Zaterdag duurde het te lang voordat de wind ging
liggen en is er niets opgestegen. De geplande nightglow van die avond werd
verschoven naar de zondag.
Primeur voor Nederland waren twee Zwitserse special shapes: een theehuisje en
een badmintonshuttle. Ook de Portugese fles was voor het eerst in Nederland te
zien.
